A Resolution on establishing a Companion Diocese Relationship

with the Diocese of Santiago of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines

WHEREAS.  Companion Diocese relationships are one of the chief means by which we knit the Anglican Communion together and broaden our experience of the Christian faith through encountering the gospel expressed in other cultural contexts; so most Episcopal Dioceses have one or more international companions; and

WHEREAS. The Diocese of Nevada has no companion diocese relationships; and

WHEREAS. Our bishops, The Rt. Rev. Dan Edwards and The Rt. Rev. Alexander Wandag, met at Lambeth Conference and discussed a possible companion relationship between our two dioceses; and

WHEREAS.  Communication between our dioceses began and Mr. Patrick Plenia and Attorney Floyd Lalwet of the Diocese of Santiago visited Nevada and met with The Rev. Canon Robert Nelson, and The Rev. Ed Lovelady, in March 2009 to further the discussion.  With the support of our bishops, we agreed to present Companion Diocese Resolutions at our respective Diocesan conventions, and work to formalize a Companion Diocese Relationship; and

WHEREAS.  The Diocese of Santiago, at their Diocesan Convention in March 2009 approved a resolution stating:

“that this Diocesan Convention now assembled express its willingness to enter into a Companion Diocese Relationship with the Diocese of Nevada – TEC.”

“Be it further resolved that this Diocesan Convention empower the Bishop and the Diocesan Partnership and Ecumenical Committee to implement this Companion Relationship with the involvement of the whole Diocese.” and

WHEREAS.  The Diocese of Nevada is home to a large number of Filipinos, many of whom are from the Northern Provinces (where the Diocese of Santiago is located), and there are two active Filipino ministries already established in our diocese; All Saints’ Holy Child Filipino Ministries, Las Vegas, served by a Filipino priest of the Philippine Independent Church, and St. Luke’s, Las Vegas, served by an Igorot/Filipino Episcopal priest; so that a Companion Relationship will enhance our evangelism and Asian Ministries in Nevada; and

WHEREAS.  We seek to establish a relationship of mutual encouragement and prayer for one another, intensified knowledge of and concern for one another, and the exchange of resources, both spiritual and material; and

WHEREAS.  The Revs Ed Lovelady and Teogenes Bernardez visited the Diocese of Santiago on behalf of the Bishop of Nevada to discuss forming a covenant with them and have reported on this visit to this convention.

BE IT RESOLVED, THEREFORE, that the 39th Convention of the Diocese of Nevada endorses the formation of a Companion Relationship between this diocese and the Diocese of Santiago, Philippines, beginning at such time as approved by the Diocese of Santiago and continuing until January 1, 2013 or terminated by mutual consent; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the bishop be empowered to set up a representative Companion Relationship Commission to implement this relationship, including the recruitment of persons and congregations in the diocese to participate in this relationship; and be it further

RESOLVED, a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Bishop of the Diocese of Santiago with our prayers and best regards.
